As we all may know Korea is mostly a conservative country that takes really slow steps towards equality. This week the LGBTQ+ community in Korea faces one of its biggest challenges. A cluster of coronavirus cases connected to clubs frequented by South Korea’s gay community has sparked an outpouring of hate speech towards the country’s already-embattled LGBTQ population. More than 100 cases have been linked to nightlife venues in the South Korean capital, and on Saturday, Seoul ordered all clubs and bars to temporarily close. The rise in cases has raised a huge red flag in South Korea, which was among the first countries outside of China to deal with a large-scale coronavirus outbreak. In recent weeks, however, authorities had begun loosening restrictions as case numbers fell. The suggestion that the outbreak is linked to the city’s gay scene has sparked a huge backlash against the LGBTQ community, including the 29-year-old man believed to be at the center of the cluster. Local media has emphasized his sexual orientation and reported that the clubs he visited are gay venues, although the venues do not openly describe themselves as such on their official websites or social media accounts. This negative media portrayal is affecting heavily the community.
This also sparks other fears, since the portrayal inflicts anger and hatred towards the community tracking infected people may become even harder. That reaction could make contact tracing harder, with people afraid to be associated with the LGBTQ community and having their sexuality outed. People have even been giving false information just to protect themselves, this has made the government use other alternatives to track them. Using phone signal tower records, the city found that 10,905 people were in the vicinity of the clubs in the nightlife suburb of Itaewon between April 24 and May 6. Authorities have texted them all, saying they should get tested. Officials have also used credit cards to track almost 500 people, who have been asked to get tested and self-quarantine. The number of people who had been tested had nearly doubled between Sunday and Monday, after authorities began offering anonymous tests, which help people get tested without having to expose their sexuality.
It is important for people to feel safe with their sexuality and Korea has not provided that, the media has outed and putted at danger several people. This even puts their jobs and relationships at risk. South Korean authorities have urged the public not to target individuals or specific communities. Kwon said it was important to protect the personal information of those infected, and South Korean authorities have warned that leaking personal information of Covid-19 patients could also be a criminal offense. This are some good steps at-least but it is still very worrisome. South Korea has no comprehensive anti-discrimination laws to protect LGBTQ South Koreans, and compared to nearby democracies such as Japan and Taiwan, the country is less accepting of same-sex couples. It is to the point where LGBTQ soldiers serving in South Korea’s military face abuse and discrimination.
It is important to stop the hate and give more protection to the LGBTQ+ community now more than ever.
Today in class I presented my group project about 3D Printing. I was excited to learn more about it since I know how vital it has become in our society. Recently we have seen the great impact that this technology has in the creation of masks for essential workers around the globe fighting the virus. We also learnt about how it is a great tool for medicine and diverse prototypes. In the other hand we saw beautiful works of art that can be created from it like jewelry and clothes. I never would have imagined that it could be so versatile and useful, the possibilities are truly endless. 3D Printing has changed the world for the better and I hope in the future it becomes even more accesible so more people can benefit from it. I am really happy I picked it because I genuinely learnt. I am also quite thankful that my classmates were really good to work with too and made the project something manageable. My part in the group was to research about experts in Puerto Rico and globally, it felt really fitting for me. The only thing I regret is not being able to fully show the class everything we had searched for because of the time requirement. So feel free to learn more and fully see our full research and understanding of the topic.
As some of you may know I started this blog thanks to my Inf 103 class, which required it. Today I officially ended the class so I’ll be giving my honest review of it and talking about things we have done and learnt. I took this class because a friend recommended it and because it is a requirement for my class. Even though at times I got frustrated with the class or with the things we had to do, I absolutely think it was necessary and helpful for me. I personally would say I enjoyed the class very much and I learnt a lot of new things.
Our Profesor, Antonio Vantaggiato was very respectful, knowledgeable, calm, enthusiastic and understanding during our semester which I appreciated. I have to recognize that this semester was gravely affected because of the pandemic but our profesor made a smooth transition to virtual classes. This was one of the classes which I felt like I was learning normally and that my money was well spent. I appreciated that he didn’t always do zoom classes too because it gave me a sense of space and liberty to work around with the difficult time. The pandemic didn’t stop us from learning and creating. One of my favorite things I learnt during the semester was about security in the internet because it’s not talked about enough of the dangers our personal information face and coding. Coding has been always an interest I had because it seemed so complicated and interesting so it was a very pleasant surprise that we actually did it and learned. It was a kinda difficult task but I learnt and enjoyed it. As for me I think I did a pretty good job in the class, I liked that I was writing a lot more and think I did my homework and projects very well. For me the pandemic hit hard and I feel lowkey very proud that I finished the semester well. The only thing I would change of this class is that I would have enjoyed if the students were a bit more interactive in the class and participated more because at times I think the class needed it, otherwise than that everything was good. I will be recommending this class to other students.
Almost one year ago I was packing my bags with my best friend to head to New York and see the Speak Yourself World Tour. I can’t believe how much things have changed since then. We decided to go last minute (like a month before the concert) and for how late we decided to go I would say we got amazing tickets. Needles to say it was an experience that changed my life. We laughed so much, cried ande grew up in that trip. I swear it must sound really dramatic but it’s 100% the truth.
It all started in 12th grade last morning period…math. My friend and I dislike HEAVILY math, we really don’t care about it and the teacher was an absolute nightmare. So all we did was talk during that class and during that particular day we were talking about how amazing it would be if we went to the BTS tour. We talked about how the timing was perfect because we would have finished school by them, we talked outfits and transportation to the point we were beyond excited. That day after school I jokingly asked my parents for permission and to my surprise they said yes. I ran to call my friend the news and he could not believe it. After a few talks with his and my parents agreed, since we has no interest on going to prom or our senior trip that would be our gift. My mom and sister would accompany us too since we could not go alone and they are both big bts fans. I planned the whole trip which surprises me to this day, I made a lot of great choices on transportation and our AirBnb and some not great ones on how far things were (That’s a story for another time haha)
That time on the trip and the planning was the best time of my life no lies and it made my relationship with my best friend even more close and special. We bought our outfits beforehand and our armybombs too. We bought our clear backpacks for the venue and fantasied about the day. The plane rides wear crazy and the trains were a nightmare but our “home” in New York was heaven and when the actual concert happened it felt unreal. BTS concerts are at another level. I cried just when I saw the stage and the atmosphere was something I have never felt before. I have never felt so genuinely happy, carefree and safe. BTS outdid themselves, they really give their all. They sound even better and out of this world than in the actual cds. The dancing is impeccable and the vcrs are beautiful. They all tried they’re best to interact with the crowd and made sure everyone had a great time. Hoseok really shook me that day, he is so beyond amazing in person so vivid in person. Jungkook cried that day and I cried with him because my heart broke. It was really the best day of my entire life and I hope every army gets the chance to experience it.
Hey guys! This is the last part of the tag, I hope everyone had fun and found it as interesting as me. Funny story a few days ago me and my friends made a zoom call and played the tag and we laughed a lot.

3.Aplicaciones y apps (iOS, Android, Mac, Windows) (Alejandra)
Plataformas: iOS, Android, MacOS
Precio: $ 10
Putty 3D: Simple Sculpting

The nth room sex scandal has rocked South Korea and the K-Pop world with a storm. The abuse case is about a series of scandals where women, many of whom are underage, are being sexually exploited. It is said that at least 74 women including 16 underage girls were tricked and blackmailed into sharing sexual images of themselves. Nth room refers to a mass digital sex abuse scandal that’s happening in South Korea un a messenger app called Telegram. Telegram is usually known for its great cyber security and encoding all contents, making them untraceable. The evil man behind all of this disgusting situation is 25 year old Jo Joo Bin also referred as Cho. Jo Cho Bin created a business out of selling pornographic and sexual abuse videos.
Cho created several closed chat rooms in different “tiers”, the 1st room, 2nd, 3rd and so on…there is where the name comes from. People interested in watching the videos would pay a high amount of money to gain access to the different tiers. Users would pay around 80 dollars to even a 1,200 dollars. The more money it costs, the more disgusting and abusive the video was. The primary targets of these videos where teenagers, they have been victims of over 260,000 men. Payers include famous idols, entertainers, artist, sport stars and CEOs.
This is such a huge issue because South Korean authorities won’t take the issue seriously. Even journalists covering the story have been blackmailed. People are blaming the victims for what happened and survivors of the horrific crime struggle with mental health issues after what happened. I won’t go into details of what the victims went through because it is so disgusting and heartbreaking. So I ask, when the name of the people involved get out please stop supporting them. Even if they’re your favorite idol please for the love of the victims who have suffered don’t ignore what they did. The survivors need justice, be an ally, don’t turn a blind eye or you’re just as bad as the people who made it happen.
I know this isn’t what I usually post about but is very necessary.
Now more than ever we are at risk on the Internet. Since the Coronavirus outbreak we spend more and more time on social media platforms and websites. For students this puts our information at a more vulnerable risk since our classes now depend exclusively in the web. Here are some things you may not know about how the Internet uses our private information and what we can do to stop it.
Social media platforms like Twitter, Instagram, Google, Facebook and even Snapchat basically own our information once we post something or log in. There’s little to no privacy. When we search for something on the web there are hundreds of companies and people looking at what you are doing so they can advertise their products to you or use your information to their advantage. This makes having privacy on the Internet close to impossible. Every site we go to, every social media platform you use keeps a track of what we do. For example Facebook has tools that allow them to recognize our friends and recommend them to us if we don’t already follow them in a feature called “people you may know” and not only that but by Facebook and Twitter knowing our friends they can see or guess what things interests us. Platform like these not only use our past searches to their advantage they also sell our web navigation patterns to others.
When we download apps, log in or create accounts they asks us to share our contacts, music, gallery and privacy. Once we accept, nothing is ours anymore. Google knows us including what we thought we deleted in a hidden files. So that is why I decided to download into my browser an app called Disconect.me. This app makes privacy a little easier so us. It keeps track and blocks of those sites that want information from me and you. The way it works is that every time you go into a page it lets you know how many other websites are activated there too. Disconnect lets you visualize & block the invisible websites that track you. It’s super easy to download and I recommend it.
Here’s how Disconnect.me has worked for me:
I first used it on YouTube and the number was pretty low, it was mostly blocking google’s different analytics page.
When I used in twitter the number went down but it showed it was blocking a lot of weird sites that I had never heard of.
Yahoo really surprised me though, I barely use it but I wanted to try it there since I heard that it was actually a really unsafe website. As soon as I went the number skyrocketed. It almost reached 100 which is alarming when you think about it. As I keep using the app, the numbers keep going up so that means it working. Once again I recommend you to use it.
To finish I want to remind everyone to use the Internet with caution. It’s a great place to learn but you also must be very careful.
Thanks everyone for reading, hope you guys enjoyed it!
